The year 2020 has been many things and none of them good. Apart from the COVID-19 pandemic engulfing many countries across the world, many prominent names from the Indian film industry lost their lives in the first half of 2020. Some succumbed to illnesses, some died of age and a few, unfortunately, took their own lives. The year has been a shock for many cine lovers, who loved and adored the celebrated stars.
From celebrated actors to well-known filmmakers to the industry's go-to astrologers to many technicians, who weaved magic behind the camera, the industry is reeling under the loss of some of its finest names.
As we enter the next half of 2020, here's remembering all those who lost their lives in the first six months of the year.
1. Sushant Singh Rajput
The actor died by suicide on June 14, leaving his fans, friends, and family members in deep shock. The police are still investigating the case.
2. Chiranjeevi Sarja
The Kannada actor, 39, died after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was married to Meghana Raj.
3. Wajid Khan
Wajid Khan of the music composer duo Sajid-Wajid breathed his last on June 1. He died due to a cardiac arrest. He was 47.
4. Mebiena Michael
Mebiena Michael was the winner of the reality television show, Pyate Hudgir Halli Life. She lost her life in a tragic road accident on May 26. She was 22.
5. Preksha Mehta
Crime Patrol actress Preksha Mehta died by suicide in May. She was 25.
6. Rishi Kapoor
Veteran Hindi cinema actor Rishi Kapoor breathed his last on April 30. He was diagnosed with leukemia and had undergone treatment in New York.
7. Irrfan Khan
A day before Kapoor's demise, another industry stalwart Irrfan Khan passed away. The actor, who was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour, succumbed to colon infection.
8. Dr Sethuraman
Tamil actor and dermatologist, Sethuraman, who had starred in comedy Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasaiya, passed away on March 26. The 36-year-old actor reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest.
Legendary Hindi cinema actress Nimmi passed away at 87. She reportedly died due to health complications.
10. Wendell Rodricks
The celebrated designer passed away at 59 in February this year. Wendell was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2014.
11. Sejal Sharma
Sejal Sharma, who was seen in Dil Toh Happy Hai Ji, died by suicide in January.
12. Yogesh Gaur
Veteran lyricist Yogesh Gaur passed away in May at the age of 77. He was known for the hit songs like Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli and Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye.
13. Mohit Baghel
Mohit Baghel, who starred in Salman Khan-starrer Ready, breathed his last in May. According to writer and director Raaj Shaandilyaa, the actor lost his life to cancer.
14. Manmeet Grewal
Known for Aadat Se Majboor and Kuldeepak, actor Manmeet reportedly died by suicide in May. He was 32.
15. Sachin Kumar
Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii actor Sachin Kumar breathed his last in May. He suffered a cardiac arrest.
16. Sai Gundewar
Sai Gundewar, who was seen in films like Rock On!!, PK, and Baazaar lost his life to brain cancer in May. He was 42.
17. Shafique Ansari
Crime Patrol actor Shafique passed away on May 10. He was reportedly battling cancer for a few years.
18. Tridib Ghosh
The popular folk theatre actor died of cardiac arrest in June. He was 68. He had also starred in films like Swasurbari Zindabad and Atmiyo Swajan.
Tamil actor KKP Gopalakrishnan passed away in February after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 54.
20. Jameela Malik
Veteran Malayalam actress Jameela Malik breathed her last on January 28. She was 73 and was reportedly suffering from age-related ailments.
21. John Kottoly
John, who had worked in films like Manu and Falaknuma Das, among others, breathed his last in January this year. He reportedly succumbed to a cardiac arrest.
22. Vinay Sinha
Vinay Sinha, the producer of Andaz Apna Apna, passed away in January.
23. Pappukutty Bhagavathar
Veteran Malayalam actor and singer Pappukutty Bhagavathar breathed his last on June 22 at his residence in Kochi, Kerala. He was 107.
24. AL Raghavan
It was in June that popular Tamil singer and actor AL Raghavan passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was married to MN Rajam.
25. K R Sachidanandan
Ace Malayalam director K R Sachidanandan aka Sachy breathed his last in June. He had undergone a complete hip-replacement surgery a few days before his demise.
26. Kulathoor Bhaskaran Nair
Malayalam producer Kulathoor Bhaskaran Nair passed away on June 15 at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He was 83.
27. Padmaja Radhakrishnan
Veteran Kerala lyricist, artiste, and painter Padmaja Radhakrishnan passed away on Monday. She was 68.
28. Tejas Parvatkar
Actor Tejas D Parvatkar, who was to star in the web show Mumbai Diaries 26/11, breathed his last at the age of 41.
29. Jagesh Mukati
Popular actor Jagesh Mukati, who was also a part of Man and Hasee Toh Phasee among other films, passed away in June. He was rushed to a hospital after complaining of breathing difficulties.
30. Tapas Pal
Bengali actor Tapas Pal passed away in Mumbai after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was a former Trinamool Congress MP.
31. Baidyanath Basak
Noted cinematographer, Baidyanath Basak, passed away in Kolkata last month. He was 96. He had worked in several Bengali films and had also worked with Raj Kapoor.
32. Anil Suri
Veteran Bollywood producer Anil Suri breathed his last in June. He had tested positive for COVID-19.
33. Basu Chatterjee
Noted filmmaker Basu Chatterjee, who had worked in Choti Si Baat and Chameli Ki Shaadi among many others, passed away in June. He was 93.
34. Anwar Sagar
Known for songs like Waada Raha Sanam from Akshay Kumar-starrer Khiladi and Yeh Dua Meri from Karisma Kapoor's film, Sapne Sajan Ke, breathed his last in June. He was 70.
35. Krish Kapur
Casting director Krish Kapur, who had worked on Rhea Chakraborty's Jalebi, passed away in a tragic car accident last month.
36. Ratnakar Matkari
Veteran Marathi writer, known for his famous plays including Prema Kahani, Lokakatha 78, Nimma Shimma Rakshas, passed away at the age of 81.
Malayalam actor Shaburaj, 40, died after suffering a heart attack in May.
38. Michael Madhu
Kannada actor Michael Madhu passed away two months ago. He was 51. The late actor was known for his comic timing.
39. Bullet Prakash
It was in April that Kannada actor Bullet Prakash passed away due to kidney ailment. The actor was hospitalised for a liver infection.
40. Sonam Sherpa
Sonam Sherpa, the lead guitarist and founding member of popular Indian band Parikrama, breathed his last in Kurseong in February.
41. Sasi Kalinga
Legendary Malayalam actor Sasi Kalinga, who had starred in over 100 films and over 500 theatrical plays, passed away three months ago.
42. MK Arjunan
Veteran music composer MK Arjunan aka Arjunan Master, who had composed over 700 melodies for the Malayalam film industry, passed away at the age of 84.
43. Paravai Muniyamma
Tamil folk singer and actress Paravai Muniyamma breathed her last in May. She was 83.
44. Bejan Daruwalla
Renowned astrologer Bejan Daruwalla breathed his last in May. He was 89.
It was in March that veteran Kollywood actor and director Visu passed away due to a cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Chennai. He was 74.
46. Jairam Kulkarni
Veteran Marathi actor Jairam Kulkarni breathed his last in May. The actor was a part of many hit films including Prem Deewane and De Denandan.
47. Imtiaz Khan
Hindi film actor Imtiaz Khan, who was married to television actress Kruttika Desai, passed away in March. He was known for his performances in Yaadon Ki Baaraat and Noor Jahan, among other films.
48. Santu Mukhopadhyay
Celebrated Bengali actor Santu Mukhopadhyay breathed his last in March. He was 69 and was reportedly admitted to a hospital for over a month.
